arawak expeditions

summer youth program

Sailing:

The next major portion of our program consists of a five day sail on board a 50 foot yacht in the British Virgin Islands. For five days, we'll live and sleep on board the boat, learning how to raise the halyard and trim the mainsail. Although each boat will be skippered by a professional captain, everyone on board will have a specific job each day: navigator, helmsman, crew chief or cook.

We begin our journey on St. John and the first day sail to nearby West End, Tortola, where we clear customs. After customs, we sail upwind to idyllic Cane Garden Bay, where we anchor for the night. Over the next two days, we're off to the Camanoes, small islands off the northeast coast of Tortola, and then to Virgin Gorda, where we'll anchor off of the Baths.

By the end of the trip, everyone should have a feeling of accomplishment at having learned how to sail, navigate and steer the boat for over 70 miles through the British Virgin Islands.
