arawak expeditions

summer youth program

Sea Kayaking:

The backbone of our program is a five day kayaking and camping expedition in the U. S. and British Virgin Islands. In Cruz Bay, St. John on Day 1, we board a chartered boat that delivers us upwind into the British Virgin Islands. On tiny Peter Island, we will practice the fundamentals of paddling in protected waters before beginning our journey. The next several days will be spent paddling, snorkeling and exploring these fabled waters where Blackbeard and Sir Francis Drake once sailed.

Our expedition is routed from east to west, which means that the wind is behind us most of the time. After Peter Island, we'll visit Norman Island, where Robert Luis Stevenson is said to have based his novel Treasure Island and where treasure may still be hidden. From there we'll cross the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Tortola, then head on to Jost Van Dyke, a beautiful little island where we'll camp for the next two nights.

From Jost, we'll paddle out to nearby Sandy Cay, a tiny uninhabited island where we'll spend a day enjoying the sand, sun and snorkeling. The next day, we'll cross back over into U.S. waters and visit Lovango Cay or Henley Cay before finishing our trip back in Cruz Bay, St. John.
